There are times I forget to be thankful for how blessed I am. Those times usually occur when I'm inconvenienced in some small way by events that have devastated many others. In my last post, I complained about gouged gas prices where I live. It's a legitimate complaint, but one so small in comparison to the many lives, homes, and livelihoods lost to hurricane Katrina.
The fact is that I've never been personally impacted by a major catastrophe. That's not to say that I haven't ached along with those who have been though.
I grew up in Florida, but have never lost property or, more importantly, loved ones to a hurricane. Though tornados have come close (about a mile away from my house once), the most damage I've experienced from them has been downed trees....which damaged no property. I've never been flooded out, though I grew up near a river.
I have so much to be thankful for, but I often don't remember that. So next time I drive by a gas station and see the exorbitant rate being charged, I will remember to be thankful that I have a home and a job to be driving back and forth between...and a car that has decent gas mileage. I will remember to be thankful that my family is whole and safe. And I will remember to pray for those whose families, homes, and jobs have been lost.
