Well, so much for that

As you know from my last post, I went to a recording studio to add some flute parts into a song for an album. It was an interesting experience, but we didn't actually use anything I came up with. The recording artist, Amy Keesee, had sent me a rough demo of the song....but the actual version by the time I got there was much different than what she had sent me. The chords for a lot of the song had been changed, and most of the rests in the vocals had been taken out. (Those rests were where it would have been most feasible to add flute.) All in all, there just wasn't much use for the flute in the new version. The new version was tight though. It really sounded great. And her producer, Snow, said that he would give me a call when they needed flute for other things, so all is not lost.
I'm just glad that I made that trek to Atlanta before all of the hullabaloo about gas price gouging. My brother, Donny, told me that it was getting so bad that our governor declared that the prices could not be raised until the gas line that got busted was fixed. I paid $2.99 a gallon for premium gas (which was all that was left tonight when I got off work). But I heard that it is as high as $5.00 a gallon in Atlanta. Scary stuff.

On the anticipation of a new experience....

I have a new experience coming up in 2 days. I will be going to a recording studio in Atlanta to lay down tracks for flute that might be used on someone's new cd that they are currently producing! That someone is Amy Keesee. She lives in Ohio, but, in one of those strange coincidences that occur occasionally in one's life, my Mom works part time for the Christian financial planning company that Amy's dad founded (Faithfull Family Life Ministries) and Amy was needing a flutist in the Atlanta area.
I'm a bit nervous about this, since I've never done anything quite like it before. I don't do much solo performance on flute (though I have done so in high school and college...usually for ratings or a grade....). I've never recorded solo either (though I have recorded in large group settings). I've also never done much improvisation on flute. This is actually what makes me a little bit more nervous. I'm very much used to playing what's written. For this, I have a vocal/rhythmic demo and a rough chord sheet. It should be interesting and educational for me. Who knows? If I do well at this, I may get more calls from Amy's producer if he needs a flutist for someone else's album. It could be the start of a new (and unlooked for) career for me. But that's putting the cart before the horse. Perhaps I should just concentrate on getting through the first recording.... More about this after the recording on Tuesday.
